AI format guide

What is an AI file?

An AI file is the native artwork format of Adobe Illustrator. It is designed to keep vector paths, type, layers and Illustrator-specific editing data available in a working design file.

Vector artwork made for editing

AI files are commonly used for logos, icons, packaging, print layouts and illustrations. Vector paths are defined mathematically, so artwork can be enlarged for a sign or reduced for a business card without the pixelation expected from a small raster image.

An Illustrator document can also contain placed or embedded raster images. That means the .ai extension does not guarantee that every visual element is a vector. Linked assets and fonts should be packaged or outlined when a file must move reliably between computers.

How the AI format changed

Early Illustrator files were based on PostScript. Adobe changed the format with Illustrator 9 in 2000. Modern AI documents can include a PDF-compatible representation alongside Illustrator editing data, which helps other applications preview or place the artwork.

Compatibility depends on how the file was saved. A PDF-compatible AI file is easier to preview outside Illustrator, but another application may flatten effects, substitute fonts or omit native Illustrator features. Keep the original AI file when editability matters.

Opening and converting AI files

Adobe Illustrator provides the most complete support for opening and editing AI files. PDF-compatible files may also open in PDF viewers or import into other vector tools, although full layer and effect editing is not guaranteed.

For delivery, export according to the destination: SVG for web vectors, PDF for review and print exchange, PNG or JPEG for raster previews, and EPS for older production workflows. Converting a file creates a new representation; it does not add missing fonts, links or editable effects.

Choose the working format first, then export a delivery format for the people or systems that need the artwork.

AI file questions

How do I open an AI file?

Open it in Adobe Illustrator for the best editing support. Some PDF-compatible AI files can be previewed by PDF readers or imported into other vector applications, but Illustrator-only data may not survive.

Can I open an AI file without Illustrator?

Often, if the document was saved with PDF compatibility. A PDF viewer or vector editor may display the artwork, but layers, live effects, fonts and other native features can be flattened or changed.

Is an AI file a vector file?

AI is primarily a vector artwork format, but an AI document can also include raster images. Inspect the objects rather than assuming every element scales as a vector.

How do I convert AI to SVG, PDF or PNG?

Open the AI file in a compatible editor and export a copy in the target format. Use SVG for web vectors, PDF for print or review, and PNG for a transparent raster preview.

Are these AI sample files free?

Yes. These five compact fixtures contain original dummy artwork and may be used for upload, parser, viewer and conversion testing.
