Image file formats explained

Image files can represent pictures as grids of pixels or as geometric instructions. Compression, transparency and animation support also vary by format, so the right choice depends on the image and how it will be used.

Raster images use pixels

Raster or bitmap graphics store color values in a grid of pixels. Their dimensions are fixed, so enlarging a small image can make the pixels visible. JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF are common raster formats.

Vector graphics use shapes

Vector graphics describe visual elements with geometric shapes, points, lines and curves. SVG is useful for logos, icons and illustrations that need to scale to different display sizes.

Compression affects quality and size

JPEG commonly reduces image size with lossy compression, while PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency. WebP supports lossy and lossless encoding, and GIF is often used for simple frame-based animation.
