JPEG format questions

What is a JPEG file?

JPEG is a common image compression format used especially for digital photographs. It reduces file size by discarding some image information, with the amount controlled by the encoder settings.

Is JPG different from JPEG?

In everyday use, JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. The shorter .jpg extension became common because older systems limited file extensions to three characters.

How do JPEG quality and file size relate?

Higher quality settings usually preserve more visible detail and create larger files. Lower settings reduce file size but can make compression artifacts more noticeable. The result also depends on image content and pixel dimensions.

When should I use JPEG instead of PNG?

JPEG is often a practical choice for photographs and smaller web image downloads. PNG is usually better for sharp text, flat graphics, transparent backgrounds or lossless image editing.
