PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format with lossless compression. It can preserve image data exactly and supports alpha transparency, making PNG useful for graphics that need a clear background or crisp edges.
PNG compression reduces file size without discarding the encoded pixel values. Re-saving a PNG does not introduce the lossy artifacts associated with JPEG encoding.
PNG supports alpha transparency, including pixels that are partly transparent. Use transparent PNG images for logos, interface assets and overlays that should sit cleanly on different backgrounds.
PNG is a strong choice for screenshots, diagrams, text, logos and images where transparency or exact edges matter. Photographs may be much larger as PNG than as JPEG or WebP.
PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It is a widely supported raster image format designed for portable images with lossless compression and transparency support.
Yes. PNG supports alpha transparency, so an image can have transparent or partially transparent pixels instead of a solid background. This is useful for logos, icons and layered graphics.
PNG uses lossless compression: decoding the image restores the encoded pixel values exactly. Editing the image itself can still change pixels, but saving it as PNG does not add lossy compression artifacts.
PNG is useful when a photo needs lossless storage or transparency, but the resulting file can be larger. JPEG is often smaller for photographs when a small amount of quality loss is acceptable.
PNG preserves pixel data and can include alpha channels, so detailed photos often need more storage than lossy JPEG images. File size also depends on image dimensions, colors and how well the content compresses.
